Russian FM visits Baku branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University
Baku, April 4 (AZERTAC). Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday visited Baku branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University.
Having familiarized himself with photo album reflecting the construction of the new campus of the Baku branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Sergei Lavrov met with the teachers and students of the University.
Speaking at the event, rector of the University, Prof. Nargiz Pashaeva emphasized the importance of students’ meeting with famous statesmen. She said the establishment of the Baku branch of Moscow State University provided an opportunity for Azerbaijani citizens to study in one of the most prestigious universities of the world without leaving the boundaries of their country. "It is no secret that the desire of the Azerbaijani youth to study here is caused by traditionally high prestige of Moscow State University - one of the greatest achievements of culture and history of the Russian people," said Pashaeva.
Speaking about the status of the Russian language in Azerbaijan, Pashaeva stressed that Azerbaijanis will always have sincere attitude and genuine love for the Russian language and Russian culture.
Despite the fact that the Baku branch of Moscow State University is the youngest university in Azerbaijan, it has become one of the most prestigious in the country, Russian FM said. "Russia highly appreciates the merits of the university in promoting, maintaining, introduction of Russian language as an important instrument of friendship between the Azerbaijani and Russian people,” said Lavrov.
The activity of the University and personal contribution of Nargiz Pashayeva to the strengthening of humanitarian cooperation between Russia and Azerbaijan have been highly appreciated by the President of Russia, who made the decision on conferring the Friendship Order on Nargiz Pashayeva, Lavrov said.
The Russian minister outlined a progressive development of relations between Russia and Azerbaijan in security, energy and investment sectors.
Then, the Russian foreign minister responded to questions from students and teachers on global political and economic issues.
Sergei Lavrov also awarded Nargiz Pashayeva with medal "For the friendship and cooperation" of the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo) under the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
