Turkish Giresun University hosts conference dedicated to Khojaly genocide
Giresun, February 21 (AZERTAC). A conference marking the 20th anniversary of Khojaly genocide took place at the Giresun University, Turkey.
Opening the conference co-organized by the Azerbaijan`s Embassy in Turkey, Giresun University and Giresun governor`s office, professor of the university Aygun Attar provided information on the Khojaly massacre and other tragedies committed by Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Giresun Mayor Kerim Aksu and Governor Dursun Ali Sahin noted Khojaly tragedy as the genocide of the whole Turkic world highlighting commemoration of victims in Turkey.
Azerbaijani ambassador Faig Bagirov underscored that Khojaly tragedy is one of the cruel and bloody events in history.
“An unprecedented massacre of hundreds of defenseless inhabitants of the small town of Khojaly in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan became one of the most heinous crimes against the Azerbaijani people. On the night of February 25, 1992, the Armenian armed forces with the help of Russian troops assaulted Khojaly and razed the town to the ground. Following the occupation of Khojaly, a total of 613 innocent Azerbaijanis were massacred by invaders, which also wiped out whole families, captured 1,275 people, left 1,000 civilians maimed or crippled, with another 150 reported missing.”
The conference also saw speeches by Deputy Director General in Prime Ministerial State Archives of Turkey Mustafa Budak and the head of the Armenian Research Group at the Turkish Historical Society Kemal Cicek.
