2008 EURO DRAW GIVES AZERBAIJAN TOUGH GROUP
At the event, Azerbaijan was represented by the President of the Azerbaijan Federation of Football Associations (AFFA) Ramiz Mirzoyev, Secretary General of the Federation Fuad Asadov and national team’s senior coach Shahin Diniyev.
As the co-host countries, Switzerland and Austria are free to play in the qualifying campaign.
All the rest fifty teams will compete in seven groups, with eight in Group A, and seven - in other six groups.
Only the top two teams from each of the seven groups will qualify for the final tournament.
Azerbaijan were drawn in Group A with Portugal, Poland, Serbia-Montenegro, Belgium, Finland, Armenia and Kazakhstan.
Coach Shahin Diniyev said the draw gave to Azerbaijan tough group.
“Surely, Portugal, Poland and Serbia-Montenegro are the group’s favorites so that means that we are going to play against tough opponents. However, we will try our best to gain the highest possible points”, he added.
