Renowned for its rich natural landscapes, diverse topography, and spectacular wilderness, Azerbaijan is home to many hidden gems. Among them are the canyon-like valleys of the Jeyranchel massif in the Shamkir district. Carved by the Kura River over thousands of years, this remarkable natural monument is one of the country’s most fascinating geotourism destinations, featuring dramatic geological formations, towering cliffs, and breathtaking panoramic views.
Reminiscent at first glance of the famous canyons of the United States and Mexico, this extraordinary landscape lies amid the vast steppe plains of western Azerbaijan. The seemingly endless arid terrain suddenly gives way to deep gorges, winding ravines, and steep cliffs that rise hundreds of meters above the valley floor.
According to experts, the formation of these canyon valleys dates back approximately 4,000 to 5,000 years. During that period, the Kura River overflowed its banks, flooding the surrounding area. Over the centuries, the combined effects of water erosion, wind, and climatic conditions gradually sculpted the intricate landscape seen today. Every ravine and cliff bears witness to thousands of years of geological evolution.
The canyon system stretches for approximately 20 kilometers, with depths ranging from 150 to 300 meters. The distinctive terraces and stepped formations along the canyon walls were created by the varying resistance of different rock layers to erosion. These remarkable geological features make the Jeyranchel canyons not only a stunning natural attraction but also an open-air geological museum.
Jeyranchel’s semi-desert and dry steppe climate has given rise to a unique ecosystem. Camelthorn, saltwort, and other drought-resistant plants are widespread throughout the area, while reptiles, hares, and other steppe wildlife thrive in this natural habitat. The region also serves as one of Azerbaijan’s largest winter grazing areas.
With its striking scenery, the area offers outstanding opportunities for ecotourism, geotourism, hiking, and landscape photography. At sunrise and sunset, the canyon walls are illuminated in changing shades of gold, orange, and deep brown, creating a truly mesmerizing spectacle.
Visitors are advised to observe all safety precautions while exploring the canyons. Certain sections contain clay-rich slopes that are prone to landslides, and the area is also home to snakes, scorpions, and other wildlife. For this reason, it is strongly recommended to visit the site with experienced guides and remain on designated routes.
