Nestled among the high mountains along the route to the villages of Bist and Nurgut in Ordubad District, Goygol captivates visitors with its extraordinary scenery and unique natural landscape. Located on the southern slopes of the Zangezur Mountain Range at an elevation of 3,065 meters, the lake covers an area of 1.5 hectares and reaches a depth of 6.5 meters. Its shimmering blue waters, which inspired the lake’s name, reflect the purity and serenity of the surrounding nature.
The lake is fed by snowmelt from mountain peaks and springs rising from its depths. Its pure, transparent waters, surrounding rocky cliffs, alpine meadows, and rich flora create a landscape of exceptional beauty.
Known by locals as the “Lake of Four Seasons,” Goygol owes its name to a remarkable natural phenomenon. Here, winter and spring exist side by side: one shoreline may still be covered in snow, while the other comes alive with fresh greenery and blooming flowers. This rare coexistence of seasons in a single landscape makes Goygol one of Nakhchivan’s most captivating and distinctive natural wonders.

Reflecting the growing international recognition of this exceptional natural and cultural heritage, the “Gamigaya and Goygol Historical, Cultural and Natural Complex,” submitted by Azerbaijan, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List during the 47th session of UNESCO, held in Paris on July 11, 2025.
