5.6-magnitude quake rattles southern Philippines

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 struck Sarangani province on Mindanao island in the southern Philippines on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported, according to Xinhua.

The institute said the quake hit at 6:22 p.m. local time, 28 km southeast of Glan town at a depth of 63 km.

The quake, which was tectonic in origin, caused no damage, it added. The tremor was also felt in the cities of General Santos, Kidapawan, Koronadal, and Zamboanga on Mindanao island.

The Philippines has frequent seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific "Ring of Fire."
