A taste of Azerbaijan in Astana: From baklava to Novruz traditions

The newly opened Azerbaijani Confectionery House in Astana showcases Azerbaijani culture, cuisine, and national traditions in the Kazakh capital.
Founded by Natig Eyvazov, who moved to Kazakhstan three years ago, the venue evolved from a Turkish baklava business into a cultural space dedicated to traditional Azerbaijani sweets. Eyvazov noted that local Kazakh patrons frequently express admiration for Baku’s architecture and Azerbaijan's hospitality.
According to Eyvazov, Kazakh customers have shown particular interest in the distinct characteristics of Azerbaijani baklava. The concept for the store was developed in consultation with members of the local Azerbaijani diaspora.
The establishment features a dedicated family room decorated with depictions of Azerbaijan's musical heritage, carpet weaving, the historic Old City (Icherisheher), and Novruz holiday customs—complete with displays of samani (sprouted wheat), traditional pastries, dyed eggs, and national costumes.
The venue also houses a cultural corner displaying books and souvenirs, including "Iravan Cuisine," a volume detailing traditional Azerbaijani recipes and desserts.
The confectionery has quickly drawn local residents eager to explore Azerbaijani gastronomy. "We are visiting for the first time and wanted to taste authentic Azerbaijani sweets," one Kazakh customer said.
