AFCON 2025: Senegal open with statement win over Botswana, Nigeria beat Tanzania

Senegal made an emphatic start to their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Botswana in Group D on Tuesday, 23 December, according to the official website of the Olympic Games.
In Group C, Ademola Lookman scored the winner against a resilient Tanzania side to give the Super Eagles a winning start to the competition.
Nigeria move top of Group D, with Tunisia facing Uganda in the group’s other match.
The result sends Senegal to the top of the group, ahead of DR Congo, who opened their tournament with a narrow 1-0 victory over Benin in the other Group D fixture.
The Cheetahs rallied late, but struggled to create clear chances against a well-organised Congolese defence, which held on for all three points.
Meanwhile, Elias Achouri scored twice to help Tunisia to a dominant Group C win over Uganda in Rabat and end a 12-year wait for an opening-match victory at the competition.
Uganda, despite second-half changes, struggled to threaten and only scored in stoppage time through a deflected Denis Omedi effort. Tunisia go top of the group on goal difference.
