Armenians disappointed with French mayor’s pessimism
Paris, February 8 (AZERTAC). Armenians have been disappointed with a pessimistic speech of pro-Armenian mayor of Marseille, French Senator Jean-Claude Gaudin.
At a reception organized by the office of the Coordination Council of Armenian Organizations of France, Gaudin disillusioned Armenians, who represented a bill making it a crime to deny far-fetched "Armenian genocide" almost as a "historic success", and are still experiencing the euphoria of their "victory".
This is also mentioned in the article titled "The pessimism of Jean-Claude Gaudin and anger of the Armenians", which appeared February 6 in the daily Paris-based newspaper “Armenian news”.
The article reads that the Armenians did not believe that the “genocide bill”, adopted by the National Assembly and Senate, will be submitted to the Constitutional Council. However, Jean-Claude Gaudin’s remarks concerning this issue have strongly discouraged Armenians.
Jean-Claude Gaudin is a member of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP). He is known as an ardent defender of Armenians.
Addressing the reception, Jean-Claude Gaudin, expressed concern that based on requests of senators and deputies, the Constitutional Council may revoke the “genocide” bill. In addition, he added that the Constitutional Council may also reject not only the bill, but even cancel the results of the 2001 vote to recognize the "Armenian genocide".
The senator also said he doubted President Sarkozy’s statement saying that "he would immediately propose a new bill if there is a rejection from the Constitutional Council," because the parliament has no time for it.
The pro-Armenian mayor criticized 18 senators and 52 deputies of the National Assembly’s appealing to the Constitutional Council in connection with the rejection of the bill. They are seriously concerned that in a short time the appeal was signed by 77 senators and 71 deputies. On the other hand, their concern is due to the fact that the majority of MP-s, who signed the appeal, are members of UMP, the party, which has achieved the approval of the bill in the National Assembly and Senate.
The speech of Jean-Claude Gaudin has disappointed and infuriated Armenians, the article reads. Speaking at the ceremony, several Armenians attacked a speaker and accused him of inaction in this matter.
