At Least 15 Die When Bus Plunges into Ravine in Western Bolivia

Baku, January 17 (AZERTAC). At least 15 people died and 17 others were injured when the bus they were riding in plunged into a ravine in the western Bolivian province of La Paz, police confirmed Sunday.

The accident occurred on Saturday morning near the town of Caxata as the bus owned by Trans Apostol Santiago was making its run from the city of La Paz to the town of Quime, about 240 kilometers (149 miles) away, the Highway and Border Police said.

According to the preliminary report by the La Paz traffic accident division, the vehicle plunged 150 meters (488 feet) down the side of the ravine after the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

This is the second serious road accident in just the past few days in Bolivia after, on Friday, 10 people died and 15 were injured in a crash in the Andean region of Oruro.

On average, road accidents in Bolivia kill about 1,000 people and injure 40,000 each year, according to official figures.
