Azerbaijan, EU discuss energy cooperation
Baku, February 15 (AZERTAC). A meeting has been held today at Azerbaijan`s Industry and Energy Ministry with a delegation of the European Union.
The talks focused on the work done since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on strategic partnership in energy sphere between the European Union and Azerbaijan by President Ilham Aliyev and European Commission`s President Jose Manuel Barrosu in 2006. They also discussed future relevant cooperation.
Deputy Industry and Energy Minister Natig Abbasov said as a result of the implementation of the Memorandum, President Ilham Aliyev and European Commission`s President Jose Manuel Barrosu signed on January 13 the Joint Declaration on Southern Gas Corridor.
Abbasov also briefed the delegation on the ongoing energy projects in Azerbaijan. He underlined the role of Azerbaijan in Europe`s energy security. The deputy minister also stressed the importance of the country as an exporter and transit country.
Director of the European Commission Mrs. Georgette Lalis said Azerbaijan was one of the important partners of Europe. She said the European Union was interested in long-term cooperation in energy sphere.
