AZERBAIJAN, GEORGIA, ROMANIA INK MOU ON GAS TRANSIT ROUTE
Baku, September 14 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan, Georgia and Romania have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create a transit corridor to ship Azerbaiajn`s natural gas to Europe.
The project, called the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania Interconnector (AGRI), envisages the construction of liquefied natural gas terminals in Kulevi terminal in Georgia and Constanta terminal in Romania, allowing gas to be shipped through pipelines from Azerbaijan to Georgia, then by tankers across the Black Sea to Romania.
The deal was signed by President of Azerbaijan`s state oil firm, SOCAR, Rovnag Abdullayev, director general of the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation Zurab Jangjava and director general of Romania`s Romgaz Marcel Adrian Piteiu. They also signed a deal to set up a joint venture on the project.
SOCAR, the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation and Romgaz will each hold a 33.3 percent stake in the venture.
Following the signing ceremony Azeri industry and energy minister Natig Aliyev highlighted his country`s role in ensuring Europe`s energy security.
He reiterated Azerbaijan`s commitment to the AGRI project.
Romania`s minister of economy, commerce and business environment Ion Ariton praised Azerbaijan`s contribution to ensuring the European energy security. He said the AGRI project would allow his country diversify its energy transportation routes.
Georgian energy minister Alexander Khetaguri said Georgia was interested in the realization of the AGRI project.
