Baku, April 19 (AZERTAC). Speaker of Azerbaijan Parliament, Milli Majlis Ogtay Asadov has met today President of Romania Traian Basescu.

Asadov said friendly relations between Azerbaijan and Romania had old history. Relations between the two countries started developing after Azerbaijan regained independence. Thanks to efforts of the two countries` leaders, high-level reciprocal visits, bilateral relations reached the level of strategic partnership.

The Speaker noted more than 50 documents were signed between Azerbaijan and Romania and these documents created strong legal basis for expansion of bilateral cooperation even more.

The Speaker congratulated the Romanian President as he was conferred the highest reward of the state of Azerbaijan - the “Heydar Aliyev” Order for his great services for development of ties between the two countries.

He also underlined the role of parliaments in development of bilateral relationship. He particularly underlined the activities of friendship groups in the two countries` legislative bodies.

Asadov also told of prospects for development of Azerbaijan-Romania economic cooperation, settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijan`s participation in major regional projects.

He also thanked the Romanian President for supporting Azerbaijan`s stance on the Nagorno-Karabalh conflict.

For his part, Basescu said Azerbaijan was strategic partner of Romania. Azerbaijan regards Romania as its close friend, as well.

“We do not consider Azerbaijan just as an exporter of oil and gas. Azerbaijan plays great role in ensuring security in the region, as well.”

The President noted Romania`s position on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remains unchanged. “We regard that the conflict must be settled on the basis of Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity.”

Basescu underlined the role of parliaments in expansion of relationship between the two countries. He also spoke of the importance of reciprocal visits of parliamentarians.
