`Azerbaijan seeks to achieve peace in region`
Baku, January 27 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan seeks to establish peace and stability in the region, and, first and foremost, it applies to resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijan`s Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov told Russia Today TV channel.
“It is impossible to build and maintain good neighbor relations, turning a blind eye on occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands and ethnic purge against Azerbaijani population in these territories. The Azerbaijani side it is needed to search for the ways of conflict resolution, which will protect interests of all parties,” he said.
“I have arrived in Moscow to continue the search for the ways out of this conflict through mediation of Russia”
A trilateral meeting of foreign ministers of Azerbaijan, Russia and Armenia took place on January 24 in Moscow.
“Despite the ceasefire, people continue to die on the troops contact line. We must to do everything possible to solve this problem,” Mammadyarov said.
First of all, troops must be pulled out from the occupied lands as provided in the basic document of talks - Madrid principles.
“This document also envisages the return of refugees and internally displaced persons to their homes, rebuilding of infrastructure in the occupied lands,” Mammadyarov added.
“The present situation cannot last too long. To achieve progress around Nagorno-Karabakh, we must use all means,” Mammadyarov said.
The Minister expressed regret over Armenia`s disregarding UN Security Council resolutions envisaging withdrawal of Armenian troops from Azerbaijani territories and return of refugees and IDPs to their homes.
“All these demands remain as yet on paper,” he said.
“In addition, there are PACE, Council of Europe resolutions, which say the settlement of this problem must be based on stage-by-stage approach and territories must be liberated since occupation of the other country`s lands is unacceptable,” the Minister said.
