Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to U.S. addresses ICD conference in Washington
Baku, November 5 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to the USA Elin Suleymanov has addressed a conference of the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy titled "High-level Meeting on Cooperation between the Continents" in Washington, D.C.
Ambassador Suleymanov’s speech focused on the UN Security Council and international law.
The Ambassador said Azerbaijan is currently one of the 10 non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.
He highlighted the fact that Azerbaijan, with its 22-year long history of independence, was first among the South Caucasus and Central Asian countries to be elected to the UN Security Council, describing this as “a landmark event for our country”.
“This success is bound to the achievements of Azerbaijan in terms of promoting peace and security,” he added.
The ambassador also spoke of the structure and activities of the UN Security Council, and raised the question of legal obligations emanating from the decisions of the Council.
In the context of implementation of the UN resolutions, the diplomat touched upon the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. He said four UN Security Council resolutions on Nagorno-Karabakh have not been implemented for 20 years as Armenia continues to disregard the requirements featured in these documents and the international community does not pay due attention to the situation,” Mr Suleymanov noted.
The Ambassador also touched upon the issue of humanitarian and cross-cultural interaction. He said Azerbaijan, which is located at the junction of continents and civilizations, actively promotes inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue. Speaking of the 3rd Baku International Humanitarian Forum, he recalled President Ilham Aliyev’s speech at the opening of the event.
The Ambassador also praised the contribution of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation to intercultural dialogue at the regional and international scale.
Founded in 1999, the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy is an international, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization with headquarters in Berlin, Germany.
