Border Guards report 90% instant success rate
Baku, August 18 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan's State Border Service is marking its 93rd anniversary.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Border Service commander Lt-Gen Elchin Guliyev said that Azerbaijan was one of only a few countries to have “such well-equipped border guards”.
"Ninety per cent of attempts to breach the border of Azerbaijan are stopped on the spot and this is a very high statistic," Lt-Gen Guliyev said.
He added that attempts to smuggle drugs from Iran into Azerbaijan had increased but "the State Border Service, in cooperation with other law-enforcement bodies, is successfully averting attempts to smuggle drugs across the border".
The commander said that the Azerbaijani side at the Red Bridge crossing point into Georgia was again working as normal. The border post had suffered problems for two days after a cable was cut in construction work in Tovuz District.
