BP EXPECTS TO SEAL GULF WELL BY SUNDAY
Baku, September 15 (AZERTAC). The U.S. government official for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill says the damaged well that leaked millions of barrels of oil should be sealed permanently by Sunday.
Retired Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen told reporters Wednesday that the relief well being drilled by oil company BP is expected to intercept the damaged well Thursday.
Once the well is intercepted, Allen says the company will perform what is known as a “bottom kill” procedure, in which mud and cement are pumped in and the well is sealed from the bottom.
Allen says the interception and bottom kill procedures are expected to take 96 hours.
The damaged oil well was sealed from the top with cement and mud last month. The spill followed an April 20 oil rig explosion that killed 11 workers.
