CIS observers` mission starts monitoring Kazakhstan Senate elections
Baku, August 11 (AZERTAC). The CIS observers` mission today has started to monitor Kazakhstan`s Parliamentary elections.
The Central Election Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan (CEC) approved accreditation of 60 observers from international organization for elections of Senate deputies scheduled for August 19.
Today, August 11, chairman of the CEC Kuandyk Turgankulov handed certificates of international observers to Yevgeniy Sloboda, head of CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) observers` mission and Yevgeniy Kozyak, member of the mission.
10 of 60 observers represent Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the CIS countries. The number of international observers and international media accredited by the Foreign Affairs Ministry has increased, the CEC says.
“Currently we have 46 candidates to the Senate registered. Candidates can be removed from registration upon their personal applications. This procedure stops two days prior to the elections,” Kuandyk Turgankulov said.
The majority of registered candidates are members of Nur Otan party. Average age of potential senators is 54 years.
Nomination of candidates to Kazakhstan Senate finished at night of July 20.
According to the decree of Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan Parliamentary elections will be held on August 19.
According to the election law, nomination of candidate Senators starts from the day following the date of the appointment of the elections and finishes one month before the elections day.
Candidates are put forth at the sessions of oblast, regional and city Maslikhats (local representative bodies).
Political parties and social unions file their nominees for the Senate seats through their representatives in Maslikhats. One candidate may be nominated by several Maslikhats. Self-nominated candidates are also allowed.
The Senate includes 47 deputies. Senators are elected for the term of six years. Half of the Senate is re-elected every three years.
