100th anniversary of First Turkology Congress marked in Tbilisi

On August 22, an event titled “100 Years of the First Turkology Congress: From History to the Future” was held in Tbilisi to mark the 100th anniversary of the First Turkology Congress, which took place in Baku in 1926.
Held at the Mirza Fatali Akhundov Azerbaijani Culture Museum, the event was initiated by the Nariman Narimanov Memorial Museum in Azerbaijan and organized by Maarif in Georgia. The event was attended by scholars and researchers invited from Baku, as well as intellectuals and representatives of the Azerbaijani community in Georgia.
Speakers discussed the significance of the 1926 First Turkology Congress in Baku for the scientific, linguistic, and cultural history of the Turkic peoples, as well as the language, literature, history, ethnography, culture, and alphabet issues addressed at the congress and its contribution to the development of Turkology.
The event also examined the scholarly legacy of the congress participants and the development of Turkological thought over the past century.
Speakers from Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye highlighted the significance of the First Turkology Congress in the scientific and cultural life of the Turkic world. The event also emphasized the continued relevance of its key principles, including preserving the mother tongue and cultural heritage, promoting scientific and cultural cooperation, and strengthening ties among Turkic peoples.
