Cuneyt Cakir has inscribed his name in the history of football as the first Turkish referee to officiate the UEFA Champions League final match between Barcelona and Juventus at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on 6 June 2015.
His refereeing style has been highly regarded as accurate and controversial at the same time. Cakir was identified as the second best referee in the world by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics based on statistics from 2010-2020.
Cuneyt Cakir was born on November 23, 1976 in Istanbul. His father Serdar Cakir was also a football referee.
Cakir, an insurance agent, rose to the UEFA's Elite category of referees in June 2011.
Cakir refereed three matches in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and three matches in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He also became the second Turkish football referee to take charge of a match at the FIFA World Cup after Dogan Babacan who officiated a game between West Germany and Chile at the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
