DOCUMENTS RELATED TO BAKU CATHOLIC CHURCH DISPLAYED
Baku, May 17 (AZERTAC). The exhibition of the documents related to the history of the Catholic Church, which was functioning in Baku at the beginning of the last century, opened in Azerbaijan`s capital. The exposition was compiled from the Azerbaijan State History Archives and includes over 30 photos, documents, architectural projects, schemes and other interesting materials related to the catholic community of the tsarist period.
The catholic community in Baku started functioning from 1863. The Baku Catholic Church was destroyed in the 30s of the last century, the period of Stalin`s terror in 1930s.
The number of Catholics in Azerbaijan at the beginning of the 20th century made up 10 thousands. Foundation laying of the Catholic Church in Baku took place in 1909, at the present Shahriyar Culture center. In 1915 the Church started functioning and in 1931 it was destroyed.
