A 2-dayday seminar dedicated to the discussion of draft of “Preliminary Report of Azerbaijan on Biodiversity” was held at the Institute of Genetic Resources of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Azerbaijan.

Director of the institute Zeynal Akbarov told in an interview the AzerTAj correspondent that more than 50 experts, representatives of relevant ministries, NAS institutions, NGOs and private sector participated at the seminar. As Project Coordinator, Z. Akbarov spoke with report “On draft of the Preliminary report of Azerbaijan on Biodiversity”. The Report informed on flora and fauna of Azerbaijan, its ecosystems and agro-biodiversity, issues of social and economic study of biodiversity, situation with public enlightenment. Speeches of national experts were met with interest. During the two days, importance of biodiversity, current situation, its protection and problems, solution of which is of great importance for the sustainable development were discussed in details in the plenary and sectional sessions.

Let us remind that “Convention on biodiversity” was adopted in the conference “Environment and development” held by the UN in 1992 with the participation of 180 world countries. Azerbaijan joined this Convention in 2000. To fulfill its commitments, the State commission on genetic recourses of biological diversity – National Council, headed by academician Jalal Aliyev was created in Azerbaijan. Beginning from February this year, executive working group of the state commission has been implementing “Strategy, national report and plan of action on biodiversity” project.
