Egypt to chair upcoming African Union Summit in 2019
Cairo, January 29, AZERTAC
The African Union (AU) announced Sunday that Egypt would head the AU Summit`s upcoming round in 2019, following the closing meeting of African leaders, according to a statement from presidency spokesman Bassam Rady.
Rady said in a statement on the sidelines of the African summit in Addis Ababa that Egypt would thus be a member of the “troika” of the African Commission, which includes the previous, current and upcoming African presidency.
The opening session of the 30th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, kicked off on Sunday, with the attendance of the leaders of 55 African member states, including Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, under the theme “Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa`s Transformation”.
During his participation in the summit, President of Egypt Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, praised the efforts exerted by Guinean President Alpha Condé, head of the current round of the AU Summit, on the issue of institutional reformation.
In his speech before the African leaders, Al-Sisi said that despite Egypt`s agreement that the summit of African leaders has absolute authority, he also believes that the decision-making process should pass through lower levels before being discussed at the summit in order to undergo reviews and improve accuracy, so that problems in implementation do not surface.
