Elliot Handler, who created the Barbie doll, dies in USA

Baku, July 25 (AZERTAC). Handler and his wife Ruth founded Mattel in 1945 along with their business partner, Harold Mattson. In 1959, they introduced the Barbie doll, which would come to be their most successful product. They named Barbie after their daughter, and the Ken doll was named after their son.

"Mr. Handler`s memory will live on through the toys he helped to introduce to generations of children," said the Toy Industry Association in a statement released on Friday, as quoted by Fox News.

Handler’s wife of 63 years, whom he met in high school, died in 2002 at age 85 from complications after colon surgery.

Handler is survived by his daughter, Barbara, and several grandchildren.
