Embassy of Azerbaijan in Cairo continues functioning
Baku, February 5 (AZERTAC). An urgent evacuation of Azerbaijanis temporarily and permanently living in Egypt started in accordance with President Ilham Aliyev`s order. The decision was caused by the murder of the member of the Azerbaijan Embassy`s staff Nijat Hojayev in street clashes in Cairo late on Saturday on his way home from work amid a wave of protests against the rule of Egyptian President Mubarak.
The headquarters and a hotline were opened at the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Cairo to make arrangements for transportation of Azeri citizens to the airport.
On January 30, 103 Azerbaijanis including 23 children and a body of the killed Azerbaijani diplomat Nizami Hojayev were brought home on chartered plane of the Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL). From January 31 to February 3, 60 more citizens of Azerbaijan were taken to Istanbul by Turkish Airlines.
Despite of the unstable situation in Egypt, the Embassy of Azerbaijan Republic in Egypt continues to render assistance to the citizens of Azerbaijan still staying in Egypt.
