First test train launched on Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway

A pilot train has successfully been tested at a Georgian section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, according to the Azerbaijani Transport Ministry.

The train covered the distance between two South Georgian towns of Akhalkalaki and Kartsakhi.

The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad links Azerbaijan with Turkey via Georgia. Its construction was made possible thanks to an intergovernmental agreement between the three countries.

The project aims to improve trade and economic relations between the countries, as well as to attract foreign direct investment through connecting Europe and Asia.

The railway is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2015.
