Georgian soldier killed in Afghanistan

Baku, February 24 (AZERTAC). A Georgian corporal has died and two have been wounded in Afghanistan, where they were serving in the ISAF international peacekeeping mission.

Cpl Giorgi Avaliani of the 32nd battalion was killed by a land mine in Helmand Province.

Cpls Nikoloz Deysadze and Ednar Abduladze were wounded in the incident.

President Mikheil Saakashvili has expressed his condolences to the bereaved and all the Georgian people.

Cpl Avaliani is the sixth Georgian soldier to die in Afghanistan. Five soldiers died and 12 were wounded in two separate incidents in Helmand Province in September.

Nine hundred Georgian soldiers are serving with the International Security Assistance Force, of whom 700 are under US command and 200 under French command.

The Georgian parliament is due to confirm today a request from the president to send an additional 11 artillery officers to Afghanistan to train the Afghan military.
