Grebes - aquatic diving birds

Grebes are small birds, live in freshwater, lakes or rivers. There are 20 species worldwide and 5 species in Azerbaijan.
Some species of grebe will go to saltwater, sea, ocean, when they are migrating.
They have rounded toes and are excellent swimmers and divers. However, they have their feet placed far back on the body, causing them not to walk easily on land.
Most grebes are a medium or large size. Some grebes, such as the Little Grebe are smaller. All Grebes have large feet with lobed toes. Some grebes find it difficult to walk on land, because their feet are so big. They are much better at swimming and diving in water.
