HEIKI TALVIETE: EUROPEAN UNION IS READY TO WORK WITH ILHAM ALIYEV

A European Union special representative for South Caucasus Heiki Talviete stated on October 30 at the news conference in Baku that the EU is ready to work with President-elect of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. Touching upon the Presidential elections of October 15, the guest said, though there were some violations, there is a progress in the whole. These thoughts have found their reflection in the statement of the EU on elections, basing on quite a balanced position.

Speaking on the events taking place after the elections, Heiki Talviete said that opposition should struggle by democratic methods and he told about it at his meetings with representatives of opposition.

Underlining that the EU is ready for cooperation with Azerbaijan at political level, he underlined that they do want to carry out the work in the field of human rights and legislature. The main role in resolution of Nagorno Karabakh conflict is to be played by the two countries and cochairmen of OSCE Minsk Group should be assisting, he said and added that he himself, as a representative of the EU will do his best for reaching peace.
