Israeli man charged over alleged baby food tampering with anesthetics in Jerusalem

Israeli prosecutors filed charges Wednesday against a 41-year-old Be’er Sheva resident, Yan Shamla, following an investigation into suspicions that baby fruit purees were spiked with anesthetics, TPS-IL reported. Jerusalem District police, with assistance from the Shin Bet security agency, led the probe.
Investigators said the case initially lacked leads or any visible connection between a suspect and the affected products. The breakthrough came after analyzing hundreds of hours of security footage and using advanced investigative tools to identify Shamla, who was then covertly monitored before his arrest.
Prosecutors requested an extension of his remand pending a formal indictment. Authorities have not disclosed further details on the number of children affected or Shamla’s alleged motive.
Three children under the age of three were hospitalized beginning in June after consuming “Prinok” brand baby fruit purée purchased from branches of the Zol U’Begadol supermarket chain on Jaffa Street in Jerusalem. The investigation identified five tainted products in total — three turned in by customers and two discovered still on store shelves — all of which showed signs of tampering before they were purchased.
