Japan to host UNSC meetings on North Korea in December

Japan's UN ambassador says the country will host separate meetings of the UN Security Council this month to discuss North Korea's nuclear and missile programs and its human rights abuses, according to NHK, Japan's public broadcasting organization.
Koro Bessho spoke to reporters on Friday after Japan assumed the presidency of the council for December.
Bessho said Foreign Minister Taro Kono will chair a ministerial meeting on December 15th to come up with measures to pressure the North to halt its nuclear and missile programs.
Bessho referred to the sanctions resolution adopted unanimously by the Security Council in September. He said he expects UN member states to fully implement the resolution, which he called "very robust."
Bessho also announced a plan to hold a separate meeting to discuss human rights abuses in North Korea, following a request by 9 out of the 15 council members, excluding China and Russia.
Japan's UN mission hopes that the meetings will help to foster understanding of its position that there is a nexus between North Korea's nuclear and missile issues and its human rights situation.
Japan will leave the Security Council at the end of this month after serving a 2-year term as a non-permanent member.
