Louvre museum attracts 8.5 million visitors in 2010

Baku, January 11 (AZERTAC). One of the great icons of the French capital, the Louvre museum, recently announced that it has recorded 8.5 million visitors for a third straight year in 2010.

Approximately 7.8 million people visited the museum`s famous permanent collections last year, The Associated Press reports. The most visited museum in the world boasts well-known works like the Mona Lisa, the "The Winged Victory of Samothrace" sculpture and a great selection of paintings and sculptures by Italian Renaissance masters.

The museum also features an impressive collection of Greek, Roman and Etruscan art, and added an Islamic Art collection in 2008, making it the youngest of the museum`s eight collections. Temporary exhibitions also played a large role in attracting tourism and art-loving visitors, according to the news source. Recent temporary installations featuring Russian art and exhibits about the history and archaeology of Saudi Arabia reportedly kept visitors` interest and generated large crowds.

Kiwis who are planning flights to Paris in 2008 may want to stop by the Louvre. Even those that have seen many of the works in its permanent collections will be able to find something new and interesting in its temporary exhibits.
