MEETING AT THE DEFENSE MINISTRY
After waiver of the 907 Section to the Freedom Support Act, the Azerbaijan-US military cooperation was also accelerated, Mr. Abiyev underlined. As the defense minister stated, the current visit will promote bilateral cooperation between the two military departments in the civil defense.
Expressing gratitude for warm reception, General White said that he was deeply impressed with the high level of servicemen in the relevant units of Azerbaijan. Therefore, it is not by random that the representatives of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan have achieved higher results in the operations in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.
Colonel-general Safar Abiyev updated the guests on the struggle of Azerbaijani people for independence, history of establishment of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, reasons and sequences of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno Karabakh conflict, on realization of the “Contract of the Century”, “TRASECA” and other economic projects, cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United States, integration of Azerbaijan to the European security structures. “All these mean that Azerbaijan closely connects with West. Despite the problems, Azerbaijan marches along the path of independence”, he emphasized.
“I am pleased that the US Oklahoma state is partner of Azerbaijan”, Major General H. White stressed. “Visit of the US defense minister Ramsfeld to Azerbaijan was important. This is an evidence what importance the US attaches to Azerbaijan. That visit was important for the United States, too”.
The defense minister gave detailed information on the history, ancient culture, rich nature and oil industry of Azerbaijan, stressing that today Azerbaijan’s major problem is liberation of lands occupied by Armenia and put an end to the war. Further, Azerbaijan would expand its co-op with the United States.
Military attachй of the US Armed Forces in the Azerbaijan Republic colonel-lieutenant Brendan McAlun attended the meeting.
