MOST OF GERMANS STAND FOR GRANTING ASYLUM TO SHEVARDNADZE
40 percent of poll participants stood against the proposal, while 50 percent of those were for this proposal, 10 percent – abstained.
Political parties involved in the poll were also positive as to the proposal: SDPG stood for the proposal with 55 percent, CDU/CSU - 53 percent, greens – 10, DPG – 83 percent.
Thus, the government of the Federative Republic of Germany stated that its proposal on granting political asylum to Eduard Shevardnadze remains in force.
In an interview to the ZDP TV former Foreign Minister of Germany Hans Dietrich Hensher highly appreciated Shevardnadze’s personality by saying, “Shevardnadze’s services to Europe, in particular, as to German unification will always remain in the history. As to his resignation, he do it right by preventing bloodshed and orienting the country to transition period.”
