NATO’S NEW SECRETARY GENERAL TAKES OFFICE
On 5 January, foreign minister of Netherlands Yaap de Hoop Schaffer took his office in Brussels as the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, referring to the German media AzerTAj correspondent reported from Berlin.
The predecessor of Yaap de Hoop Schaffer was George Robertson from Scotland. NATO has no right to adopt decisions with majority of votes. Therefore, major duty of the Secretary General is to bring the 19 NATO member-states to a consensus in solution of the tough military-political questions of the time.
According to the German analysts, the new Secretary General is in close links with the US political circles, adheres military-political strategic course of the United States, and supports its position.
