NEW AUTHORITY OF GEORGIA REGULATES RELATIONS WITH AJARIA
Conducting of the Presidential and Parliamentary elections in Georgia was in the focus of negotiations. Over 10 years, leadership of Ajarian Autonomy Republic is not fulfilling the decisions and instructions of the Central authority and within this period, A.Abashidze did not arrive in Tbilisi. At the Parliamentary elections, held in Georgia, on November 2, “Democratic Revival” Party of the leader of Ajaria Aslan Abashidze took the second place. At the meetings, held against President Shevarnadze by the blocs “National Movement” and “Burdjanadze-Democracts”, the “revivals” supported the authority. Aslan Abashidze in sign of protest against resignation of the President, who did not end his term of office envisaged at the Constitution, announced the state of emergency in Ajaria. He stated that he was not going to take part at January 4 Extraordinary Presidential elections.
According to Aslan Abashidze, conducting within this short period of the Presidential and Parliamentary elections means the deliberate repeat of the mistakes committed up to November 2. The only way is to boycott the elections, Mr. Abashidze stressed. Visit N. Burdzhanadze to Batumi is also connected with relax of tension. Nino Burdzhanadze stated that 6 hours negotiations have continued in Batimu was a good start. She stated that it is impossible to discuss for a one meeting the problems remained since 1992.
Aslan Abashidze stated that the sides stood on different positions. According to him, main condition for resumption of the lost trust is continuation of dialogue.
On the same day, “ National movement” held the second Congress in Tbilisi. Presidential contender, leader of the movement Mikhail Saakashvili sharply attacked Aslan Abashidze. He stated that no one could violate the territorial integrity of Georgia.
