NEW SECRETARY GENERAL OF NATO – DUTCHMAN
The decision on appointment of chief of the North-Atlantic Alliance Yaap de Hoop Schaffer was unanimously adopted be members of the NATO Council on 22 September last year.
The 55-years old Yaap de Hoop is a jurist, over 25 years has worked at the foreign minister of Netherlands.
Since 1978 to 1980, he worked in Brussels in the Dutch delegation at NATO. Mr. Yaap de Hoop became minister of foreign affairs of Netherlands in July last year.
As Secretary General of NATO, Mr. Yaap de Hoop is to make his first visit to the US, Bosnia and Kosovo. Besides Washington, he is to visit all other capitals of the NATO member-states.
Late current year the Secretary General for the first time will preside at the meeting of the heads of NATO countries in Istanbul.
