PACE BUREAU ASSESSED PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN AZERBAIJAN AS DEMOCRATIC STEP
“Along other issues, the session discussed 15 October presidential elections conducted in Azerbaijan, and its sequences. The Bureau members were updated. Arrival of a group of PACE representatives in Azerbaijan, familiarization with the after election situation, making analysis and preparation of appropriate report to be submitted to the session for consideration and other items were focused.
Presidential election conducted in Azerbaijan was assessed as a democratic step. Congratulation messages of the CE Secretary General Walter Schwimmer and PACE President Peter Schieder are evidence to that.
The Bureau expressed its disappointment with the after-election events, noting that this can affect image of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Along with it, the Bureau assessed as understandable and positive the immediate steps made by President Ilham Aliyev, call on numerous forces to dialogue, release of people taking part in the said events, and investigation of those who committed crimes, stressing that these factors correspond the European standards.
The deputies stated that the issue connected with Azerbaijan would be discussed several times. Because, at the session the obligations Azerbaijan took before CE, should be discussed. The session participants expressed hope for further expansion by Azerbaijan the European-Azerbaijan relations.
