PACE chief praises Azerbaijan`s activity
Baku, January 25 (AZERTAC). President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Mevlut Cavusoglu has hailed the activities of Azerbaijan, which celebrates the tenth anniversary of its joining the Council.
"I welcome the 10th anniversary of Azerbaijan`s membership of the Council of Europe. Over these 10 years, Azerbaijan has made a significant progress."
Cavusoglu emphasized the progress made in the parliamentary elections in November: "We can say that our criteria were met totally in the elections. These opinions have been reflected in the balanced report on the election and this report was adopted at the meeting held this morning at the PACE Bureau. I repeat once more that progress has been made in the election sphere in Azerbaijan.”
“We are on the right path. Azerbaijan must continue on this path, continue the process of reforms..."
Cavusoglu also commented on the restoration of a subsommitee on the Nagorno-Karabakh within the Assembly.
"In 2005, PACE adopted resolution No 1416 on the conflict. We propose to fulfill this resolution through the subcommittee. The PACE Bureau has clearly expressed its view on that," Cavusoglu said.
PACE did have a subcommittee on Nagorno-Karabakh, but it stopped work after the death of its chairman, Lord Russell-Johnston, in July 2008, Cavusoglu recalled.
"The issue will be discussed at the meeting of the Bureau on Friday. Candidates for the post of chairman of the subcommittee have not been put forward yet. I informed the heads of the political groups at the PACE about it and think that the Bureau will elect a new, unbiased chairman for the subcommittee."
