Pakistan`s “National Herald Tribune” newspaper published article on national leader Heydar Aliyev
Baku, May 12 (AZERTAC). Pakistan`s English-language newspaper “National Herald Tribune” published an article by Raja Aamir Bhatti entitled “Heydar Aliyev - the Leader of Azerbaijan”.
The article briefed the readers on the life and career of national leader Heydar Aliyev. The author writes: “In 1939, after graduating from Nakhchivan Pedagogical School, he studied at the Architecture Department of the Azerbaijan Industry Institute. From 1941 Mr. Heydar Aliyev headed the department at the Internal Affairs Commissariat of Nakhchivan and in 1944 was sent to work at the state security bodies. While working in the security bodies, from 1964 Mr. Heydar Aliyev held the post of deputy chairman, and from 1967 chairman of the Committee of State Security under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan. He was conferred the rank of lieutenant general.
Being elected in July 1969 as the First Secretary of the Central Committee of Communist Party of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev became the head of the Republic. In December 1982 Heydar Aliyev was elected a member of Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Soviet Union, and appointed to the post of the First Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the USSR.
In October 1987, Heydar Aliyev, as a sign of protest against the policy pursued by Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, resigned from his post.
On 20 January 1990 the Soviet troops entered Baku killing innocent unarmed civilians. Next day after this Mr. Heydar Aliyev came to the Azerbaijan Representation in Moscow and in his statement demanded to punish the organizers and executors of the crime committed against the people of Azerbaijan. As a sign of protest against the hypocritical policy of leadership of the USSR, in connection with the critical conflict occurred in Nagorno-Karabakh, in July 1991 he left the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
By return in July 1990 to Azerbaijan, Mr. Heydar Aliyev lived in Baku, then in Nakchivan, and in the same year was elected a deputy to the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan. In 1991-1993, he held the post of Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Autonomous Republic of Nakchivan, Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 1992, at the constituent congress of the New Azerbaijan Party in Nakchivan, Mr. Heydar Aliyev was elected Chairman of the Party.
In May-June 1993 the country faced extreme governmental crisis and was at the verge of civil war, loss of independence. The people of Azerbaijan demanded Mr. Heydar Aliyev to lead country. On 15 June 1993, Heydar Aliyev was elected Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan. On October 3 as a result of nationwide voting Mr. Heydar Aliyev was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. On October 11, 1998 Mr. Heydar Aliyev was re-elected President of Azerbaijan.
Mr. Heydar Aliyev was awarded a number of state order and medals, international awards, elected honorable doctor of universities in many countries.
People of Azerbaijan highly value the legacy of their National Leader. The Heydar Aliyev Foundation, named in commemoration of the National Leader, was established on 10th of May, 2004. The main goal of this organization which is lead by First Lady of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva is to implement large-scale projects and programs, promotion of cultural heritage of Azerbaijan.
The legacy of Mr. Heydar Aliyev is being continued by the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev”, the author writes.
