President Ilham Aliyev: Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is a historical project

“Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is a historical, strategically important project. The length of this route is approximately 850 km, of which 504 km runs through the Azerbaijani territory,” said President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at a solemn opening ceremony of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway.
The head of state noted that this railway is the shortest and most reliable route linking Europe with Asia: “The first stage will see transportation of 5 million tons of goods, the next 17 million tons, and then goods will be transported in even larger quantities. Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is becoming a key element of Eurasia’s transport map.”
The President said that the railway will contribute to increasing both trade and mutual investment among the countries on this route. “The cooperation among the countries using this road will deepen.”
President Ilham Aliyev stressed that the BTK railway will also contribute to stability and security. “I am sure that the launch of this road will boost the tourism sector, and the number of tourists will increase. Successful operation of the BTK railway will strengthen the geopolitical significance of our countries and create additional opportunities for us. The BTK railway is of great importance in terms of development of business and mutually fruitful cooperation,” the President added.
