I want to add my deepest sympathy to those expressed by President Bush on the loss of your father, President Heydar Aliyev.
The friendship our two countries now enjoy is a legacy of your father’s determination and leadership and includes our close cooperation in the war on terrorism. Heydar Aliyev made a lasting contribution to Azerbaijan’s foundation for long-term economic prosperity, including increased opportunities for foreign investment and he worked for the peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The United States will build on this foundation of strong ties, seeking to support Azerbaijan’s sovereignty, prosperity and democratic development.
