I would like to express my sincere condolences to you following the death of your father.

President Heydar Aliyev will be remembered as a statesman who led his young country through the critical early years of independence and laid the foundations for the development of modern Azerbaijan.

Your father brought stability to Azerbaijan and a commitment to solving regional conflicts through peaceful means. He worked hard to develop good relations both with Azerbaijan’s neighbors and beyond. He understood the importance of economic development of Azerbaijan, the future of the region and the development of your country’s relations with NATO. He impressed me with the breadth of his knowledge and his deep commitment to his people.

I am certain that you will work hard to build upon his legacy. Finding a lasting solution to the conflict over Nagorno Karabakh will be critical to both Azerbaijan’s and the regions’ future.

Please accept once again my profound sympathy for the loss of your father.
