Regional seminar on social services conducted in Lankaran
Baku, April 26 (AZERTAC). On 23rd and 24th of April, “Social Services Initiative” Public Union in partnership with Social Policy Committee of National Parliament (Milli Majlis) conducted regional seminar on the problems of the people with disabilities and the ways of solutions, as well as the improvement of legislation of Azerbaijan Republic in light with disability rights, AZERTAC reported.
More than 40 participants (50% people with disabilities) consisting of representatives from civic organizations and constituencies of southern and other regions of Azerbaijan took part at the seminar.
During the seminar, number of presentations made on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, activities as well as policy reforms delivered recent years, improvement of respective legislation, as well as roles and responsibilities of civil society members and constituency in lawmaking process.
One of the main themes that caused a great interest and active participation of the participants was discussion over the draft “Law on Social Services”.
In general, all participants expressed their positive feedback on draft law made in accordance with the modern standards and requirements. The most acknowledged advantages included, but not limited to human rights and equal opportunity, target, affordable and accessibility principled on the basis of which the law developed. Representatives of the civil society expressed strong belief that enactment of the law will open a new era in provision of social services for vulnerable people, especially children with disabilities and special needs. And one of the reasons is emerging social work and respectively social workers delivering new services.
Delivering series of round table discussions and presentations on relevant subjects will continue to be delivered throughout the week. The seminar will end with public hearing and presentations over Law on Social Services in general meeting of Social Policy Committee members and experts.
