TADEUSH SVIATOCHOVSKY: “HEYDAR ALIYEV’S POWER MEANS STABILITY AND SUPPORTED BY PEOPLE”
Assessing establishment of stability and security in the country as the major achievement of President Heydar Aliyev, professor Sviatochovsky divides the period of 1993-2003s to three stages: national unity, strong administration and moderation. He said that the last years of Heydar Aliyev’s power are remembered with the admission of Azerbaijan to the Council of Europe and provision of freedoms in the society. So, the press is completely free. The authorities have clearly stated that the opposition does not threaten it. Because Heydar Aliyev’s power means stability and the people supports it.
Dwelling on the political life of Azerbaijan, the professor stressed that the opposition parties traditionally unite not around certain programs, but around persons. It is not surprised that there is no considerable difference among their programs. Calling the election of Ilham Aliyev as President on 15 October, the professor said it was an “expected event” for America. According to him, in the coming years, the administering generation will be notably changed.
Fiona Hill stressed that there are many problems to be solved by the new President. Along with the Nagorno Karabakh problem, Ilham Aliyev should maintain balance relations with the neighbors, and ensure the country’s development.
Regarding the judgments on the new president’s inexperience, Fiona Hill said that lack of experience does not mean inability, and last years Ilham Alieyv could prove himself in the management career.
