US TO ASSIST IN CONDUCTION OF DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS

The United States, in interaction with the government of Azerbaijan, opposition and NGOs, will assist in conduction of the elections in compliance with international standards. This was underlined in the statement, disseminated in connection with the coming presidential elections in Azerbaijan, press secretary of the State Department Richard Baucher said. He stressed that the United States has allotted for this purpose 2 million USD and finances 150 international observers who will observe the elections.

Representative of the Department of State noted that positive alterations were observed in the election process. Along with this, he called on the governments not to exert pressure on the representatives of opposition and human rights defenders, while the opposition parties - to conduct election campaign in calm conditions, in compliance with the law and democratic standards.

Mr. Richard Baucher recalled that Prime Minister Ilham Aliyev in his meetings with the Secretary of State Colin Powel and his first deputy Richard Armitage state that the government of Azerbaijan, adhering the OCSE principles, would conduct elections in compliance with the international standards.
