USA TO ASSIST AZERBAIJAN IN DEMOCRATIC DEVELOPMENT
I realize that the report concerns the arrests after post-October-elections events. But I would not like to judge the report until I am fully acquainted with it. I can just say that I am satisfied with the fact that the Government of Azerbaijan has released 10 detainees and guaranteed that the cases of 90 will be shortly included in the court procedure. This step agrees with Azerbaijani Government’s statements on ensuring fair court procedure and legal defense of the people. I take the Decree on Pardon of 160 men signed by the President of Azerbaijan on December 29 as a positive step, as well. Based upon these two inspirational facts, we would like to assist the Government and all strata of the society in intensification of democratic reforms.
President Ilham Aliyev spoke of the building modern democratic state in Azerbaijan in his inauguration speech. We want to help him and all the people of Azerbaijan to achieve this goal.
