ZBIGNEW BZEZHINSKI: “US-AZERBAIJAN RELATIONS CAN BE CHARACTERIZED AS ALLIANCE”
Expressing his gratitude on behalf of the delegation for warm reception, the guest he was pleased with this visit, stressing that the visit was of familiarization character to discuss future perspectives and be aware of the ongoing processes in the region, press service of the defense ministry said.
Defense minister Safar Abiyev was grateful for sincere words, underlining that the Azerbaijan considers the US as strategic partner and attaches special importance to cooperation with it. We would expand our military co-op and see real benefits of this cooperation, the defense minister said.
Noting that the current situation in the region and continuation of them in such manner is jeopardy for both Azerbaijan and world community, colonel-general Abiyev said that after regaining its state independence, Azerbaijan strives to integrate to European and world security structures, come up to NATO and realize strategic partnership with the United States. Election by the people of the Republic of Mr. Ilham Aliyev as President of Azerbaijan evidences the continuation of this policy in the years coming. Decision of the people of Azerbaijan opens large opportunities for establishment of peace and security in the region.
Noting that the aggressive Armenia, constantly provided with weapons and armament, and supported by its guardians, keeps under occupancy the lands of Azerbaijan and that it the major impediment in the South Caucasus for peace and security, the Minister said that, unfortunately, the world community, instead of naming the aggressor, and prevent aggressive separatism, pursues a double-standard policy and regards the occupant and the victim equally. In addition, this imparts disappointment for peaceful resolution to the conflict and calls to resume military operations. Long-standing peace and security can be restored only after restoration of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and return of the refugees to their homelands. “Azerbaijan will never agree with annexation of its territories to Armenia”, the Minister emphasized.
The, colonel-general Safar Abiyev updated on the military-political situation in the South Caucasian region, the country’s relations with neighbors, exchanged views on the Azerbaijan-US, Azerbaijan-NATO relations and other issues, responded the guests.
Ambassador of Azerbaijan to the United States Hafiz Pashayev attended the meeting.
