Azerbaijan, Iraq discuss prospects for expanding cooperation
Baku, June 20 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan and Iraq have today discussed prospects for expanding the bilateral cooperation as an Iraqi delegation met members of an Azerbaijan-Iraq parliamentary friendship group.
The Iraqi delegation`s visit is part of a series of events titled “Azerbaijan-Iraq cultural relations, yesterday, today and the future”.
They met head of the Azerbaijan-Iraq parliamentary friendship group Ilham Mammadov, and members of the group MP Ganira Pashayeva and chief of the Union of World Turkish Youth Akram Abdullayev.
Mammadov said the relations between Azerbaijan and Iraq dated back to ancient times. “These relations started to develop more rapidly after Azerbaijan restored its independence.”
He praised the role of parliaments in developing the bilateral relations, and stressed the importance of reciprocal visits of parliamentarians.
Mammadov expressed confidence the visit by the Iraqi delegation would contribute to expanding the two countries` relations.
Pashayeva said Azerbaijan attached great importance to developing its relationship with Iraq. The MP informed the Iraqi delegation of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and Armenians` crimes against Azerbaijanis. Pashayeva said Armenia continued to disregard all resolutions by international organizations demanding an unconditional withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from Azerbaijan`s occupied lands.
Abdullayev stressed the necessity of deepening the Azerbaijan-Iraq cooperation, saying “NGOs have a role to play on this front”.
The Iraqi delegation members called Azerbaijan a brotherly country to Iraq. They praised Azerbaijan`s development. They noted Iraq was interested in developing relations with Azerbaijan in all fields.
At the end of the meeting the Azerbaijani MPs were honored with awards for their contribution to developing the Azerbaijan-Iraq relations.
