Baku-hosted conference highlights trade unions’ role in climate action

A conference on the role of the trade unions in climate action was held in Baku.
The event was jointly organized by the Azerbaijan Trade Union Confederation (AHIK); the National Centre of Trade Unions of Turkmenistan (TMHİM), the International Labor Organization (ILO); the Bureau for Workers' Activities (ACTRAV).
The event gathered state officials, Azerbaijani MPs, representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGO) and public organizations, members of the Azerbaijani and Turkmen trade unions, as well as ILO representatives, and members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
In his remarks, Mukhtar Babayev, Representative of the Azerbaijani President on Climate Issues, stressed the importance of the event, highlighting Azerbaijan’s climate action policy, including the country’s efforts toward green transition and environmental protection.
Subsequently, AHIK Chairman Sahib Mammadov noted that Azerbaijan is among the countries contributing significantly to global climate action, adding that the country takes consistent and systematic steps in this area under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. Describing the climate change as a global challenge, which also affects social and labor relations, the chairman added that in this regard, the changes taking place in the labor market require more flexible and coordinated action from trade unions.
Other speakers included Oguljennet Berdiliyeva, Chairperson of the National Centre of Trade Unions of Turkmenistan; Zaur Aliyev, Azerbaijani Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Protection of Population; Musa Guliyev, Chairman of the Labour and Social Policy Committee of Milli Majlis; Azer Bayramov, Director General of the OIC Labor Center; Huseyn Huseynov, Adviser to the Azerbaijani Economy Minister; Sergejus Glovackas, ACTRAV’s Desk Officer for Central and Eastern Europe.
The event proceeded with panel discussions, concluding with a screening of a video on AHIK’s reforms and innovations in Azerbaijan’s trade union system.
